An overcast and drizzly Sunday morning in Colorado was a wonderful novelty here in the sunniest state, a good morning to check in with the wild residents at City Park.

We were not early enough to catch sight of the beavers before they headed off to sleep but their lodge is covered with a lot more greenery since we were there about a month ago.

Repairs have been made at the main dam. The ducks thought the new plank was helpful as it is difficult to climb over all those branches with webbed feet. Perhaps the addition of the tennis ball was just for a colorful accent.
The elegant white heron was walking slowly back and forth across the creek, occasionally dipping into the water. After swallowing a nice sized fish he resumed his patient stroll.
Down in the bushes by the stream we found a black-crowned night heron, a handsome two-toned fellow. They are most active at dusk and at night. Perhaps he was enjoying the overcast morning.
The solar powered pump in the little pond is popular with birds of all sorts. As we approached a medium sized dark bird was spreading his wings in his imitation of Bat-bird. His reflection in the still pond added to the effect.

Momma Mallard was leading the troupe on a swim around the pond while white heron looked on.

Diligent runners raced by occasionally and the prairie dogs kept a constant vocal vigil when we got too close to their territory. But, on the whole it was a wonderful quiet interlude to enjoy our feathered friends.
We will come back soon.
Great shots! The first one with the tennis ball really adds an artistic kind of flare.
Thanks for the kind words Samuel.
